Aluminum sulfide is an inorganic compound that is extremely sensitive to moisture. It will hydrolyze quickly in case of water to produce toxic hydrogen sulfide gas.Therefore, in the grinding process, the environmental humidity must be strictly controlled and suitable ball milling equipment must be selected to ensure safety and efficiency.

First of all, priority should be given to ball mills with inert atmosphere protection.Because aluminum sulfide easily reacts with moisture in the air, it is difficult for ordinary ball mills to meet its processing requirements.It is recommended to choose a closed ball mill that can operate under the protection of inert gases such as nitrogen or argon to effectively isolate moisture and oxygen and prevent material deterioration and safety accidents.

Secondly, the choice of material is essential.The ball mill tank and grinding medium should be made of materials with high hardness, corrosion resistance and non-reaction with aluminum sulfide, such as zirconia, silicon carbide or stainless steel lined with teflon.Avoid using abrasive bodies containing iron or other active metals to avoid side reactions or contaminating samples.

Third, grinding efficiency and temperature control need to be taken into account.Long-term high-speed grinding may cause local heating and exacerbate the risk of aluminum sulfide decomposition.Therefore, it is advisable to choose a ball mill with a cooling system or intermittent operation to control the temperature within a safe range.

Finally, the equipment capacity is reasonably selected according to the experiment or production scale.A small planetary ball mill of 0.5–2L can be selected for small-batch preparation in the laboratory; for industrial production, a continuous or large-capacity batch ball mill system needs to be considered, and it is equipped with automatic inflation, discharge and sealing detection functions.
